He's a cute little sucker...

Check out this amazing looking jumping spider, who can jump more than 50 times its body length. The weird thing about him is none of his legs has enlarged muscles. This little interesting dude's power to jump comes from a fast contraction of muscles in the front part of the body increasing the blood pressure, which causes the legs to extend rapidly much as the hydraulics in a low-rider car.

C-toph Interview & Dubstep Mix - October 2009

C-toph
is a turntablist, jungle/dubstep dj living in Costa Rica.
I've seen him play less than a handful of times and was completely impressed with his old-school junglist turntablist style. I can't pretend I know him that well, which is one of the reasons why I decided to interview him.

Q: Tell me a little about yourself & what drew you to move to Costa Rica?

A: I'm a guy who loves beats, breaks, bass, bleeps, & scratches. I freestyle all my mixes because planning things out ruins it for me or because of my short attention span. I moved to Costa Rica 4 years ago because my wife knew it was our next step. I trust her, so we moved here.

Q: How were you introduced to jungle and dubstep?

A: I think jungle happened for me in 95. I started going to warehouse parties and raves regularly and jungle had a dedicated following in the Midwest. I knew I was listening to the most perfectly bad ass music that had ever been written. I started out just dancing all night every weekend, but I began to have trouble finding the music I wanted to hear, so I started collecting jungle vinyls. I started collecting dubstep in 2004. I bought some Grim Dubs, DMZ and HotFlush vinyls and just slowly got hooked on it. Again, I knew I was listening to perfect music, like the genius stepchild of jungle, hip hop, acid, garage, dub, and dirty scratch beats.

Q: As a dj, do you have any suggestions for our growing jungle/dubstep/d&b scene?

A: Yeah, stay gold! I've never had a bad time in San Jose. There's always room for improvement, but I love what you guys are doing. Maybe we should pay more attention to the sound systems and the people running them. I think this can happen anywhere, not just Costa Rica, where you rent a sound system and engineer from a company who does rock shows or "bailes" and they have no idea how the music is supposed to sound. So, they EQ it to the best of their abilities but it sounds terrible. I played a show with Huba & Silica at the Jazz Cafe and I spent some time helping Ernesto and the sound guy work out the levels for H&S's music. The sound guy was skilled and helpful, but it was obvious he didn't know how their music was supposed to sound. It really paid off and there was a huge difference in sound quality from the beginning of the sound check. Hopefully at some point the scene will have it's own sound systems and people who are passionate about that aspect.

Q: What are your current projects & what do you have planned for the near future as far as music goes?

A: I just purchased Serato in January and i'm still getting that dialed in and attempting to actualize all the possibilities that it opens up. At its best, it can be the hybrid between a loop-based mega mix Ableton-type dj set and all the things I was already doing with turntables. I've been scratching a little with Huba&Silica and I'd like to do more of that sort of thing. It's fun for me to come to a show and be versatile, play some hip hop and head beats while people trickle into the club, scratch with a live act and rock out a little later in the evening with some jungle/bleepcore/dubstep action.

Gyzmo is not only a great friend of mine but also a huge advocate for drum & bass in this country, from djing and promoting to producing and making flyers. He's pretty much the most self-less person I know when it comes to this music.
Today I received an email from him with an awesome new Dubstep mix of his. This mix is filled with sick, dark basslines and stimulating ass shakers. Listen or download below... Enjoy!
